Donald Judd
Born in 1928 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Studied art and philosophy in Virginia and New York, followed by various teaching assignments at American universities such as Yale. He then worked as a freelance art critic for international art magazines and as a painter and sculptor looking for the “in-between”. Breakthrough with the essay "Specific Objects". From 1977 onwards, Judd lived in Marfa, Texas, where he worked on spatial projects and exemplary installations together with friends. Judd is considered a leading figure of Minimalism, alongside Robert Morris and Sol LeWitt. Starting in 1984, he collaborated with Lehni and participated in exhibitions in renowned galleries worldwide. Died in New York in 1994.

Judd's works of art become visible through clarity, objectivity, array and disarray, as well as the abandonment of composition. The themes of material, space, colour, volume and light, as aspects of everyday life, are of fundamental value. Despite the strict clarity of his work, interactions result from open and closed volumes, inside and outside shapes, and transparent and compact forms. Judd uses reduced, basic geometric shapes made of industrial materials, whose sparseness exhibits an extraordinary aesthetic.
