Bennington Potters
Founded in Bennington, Vermont, by David Gil in the late 1940s, Bennington Potters carried forward the town’s long ceramic tradition dating back to 1847, when local factories produced Rockingham and flint enamelwares with distinctive mottled glazes. By stamping his pieces “1847 dg,” Gil acknowledged this earlier history while also marking them with his own initials. Unlike the mass-produced wares of the 19th century, Gil’s work emphasized modern forms, bold glaze experiments, and small-batch craftsmanship—bridging Bennington’s past with a new mid-century vision.
