Founder of Norell Möbel, Arne Nobell is known for his versatile use of wood, leather, fabric, and metal in furniture characterized by comfort and ease. Simple and casual, yet sophisticated, his designs epitomize modern Scandinavian style. Most notable in his 1966 Ari chair, consisting of a cushioned leather exterior and steel frame, which was comfortable and yet retained Modern elegance. Born in 1917 in Sweden, Norell opened his own workshop in Stockholm in 1954 and started Norell Möbel in Småland, Sweden four years later. He died in 1971 in Sweden, and was posthumously awarded the British Furniture Manufacturers "Showpiece of the Year” - their most prestigious honor - for the Ari chair, in 1973. His original designs are still in production today. In fact, Norell’s furniture, as well as work by his daughter Marie Norell-Möller and other Swedish designers, are still crafted by hand in Sweden by Norell Furniture, which has remained a family-run company.
