Penta Armchair by Daciano da Costa
The Penta Armchair feels like a piece of 1970s pop art you could sink into — plump, powdery, and a little bit playful. Designed in 1971 for Lisbon’s Hotel Penta, it softened the era’s sharp modernism into something warm and tactile. All curves, no corners, it’s furniture with a sense of fun.
Daciano da Costa — architect, designer, and self-proclaimed “pope of Portuguese design” — helped shape the country’s modern visual language through five decades of work. His approach was grounded in function but always culturally attuned, giving everyday objects a sense of significance. The Penta captures that perfectly: all clean lines, balanced form, and ergonomic grace.
